The follow up to Black was cancelled after the co-creators left the company. Twisted Metal itself actually has a troubled history that ended up leading to its decline: 3 and 4 were made by another studio (989), and were considered weaker games than the first 2. As others have mentioned, there were a few other good games in the genre, like Interstate '76 and its spinoff Vigilante 8, but none of them were close the the success of Twisted Metal. The genre as a whole was never really that big though, it just had 2 popular series: Twisted Metal and Carmageddon. It makes sense of course, since it wasn't until then that technology had advanced enough to do a decent job capturing the feel of Mad Max and Death Race 2000. In a way, the popular car combat videogames of the mid to late '90s were late on arrival. Without many other films really following up on the concept, interest dwindled.

Those films not only provided inspiration for the designers, but also served to get players interested in the genre. Even the most well known: Car Wars didn't hit its stride until 1985. What games, you say? Board games like Thunder Road, Dark Future, and later Roadkill. Although the film Death Race 2000 (and the game based on it) preceded Mad Max, the Mad Max influence is felt much more in the games that came out in the '80s. That being said, I think a number of factors play into the decline.įirst and foremost, car combat is largely inspired by Mad Max. I mean, the total number of car combat series ever made is what.under a dozen? If you count board games too, you're still under 2 dozen. Certain titles achieved success, but the genre itself has always been niche. I'm a huge car combat afficianado, so this is going to be lengthy.Ĭar Combat as a genre has never really been popular. r/CoOpGaming - A community for co-op gaming r/xboxone - Xbox-specific subreddit for general Xbox news and discussion r/playstation, /r/PS4 & /r/PS5 - PlayStation-specific subreddits for general PlayStation news and discussion r/pcgaming - PC gaming-specific subreddit for general PC gaming news, discussion and gaming tech support r/nintendo - Nintendo-specific subreddit for general Nintendo news and discussion r/shouldibuythisgame - Find out what's worth getting. r/gamingsuggestions - Go here to help you find your next game to play r/gaming4gamers - Discussion, bar the Hivemind Top-level comments must be at least 100 characters in length.
